Cable ships
The ships that lay and repair undersea cables, with positions from their own radio broadcasts (AIS). A ship is only shown as working on a repair when a source says so.
Speeds in knots (kn), the unit ships use: 1 kn = 1.85 km/h = 1.15 mph. Positions come from receivers on land and update here within a second of being heard. A moving ship sends one every few seconds, a ship at anchor or in port every few minutes, and ships far from land may not be heard for hours or days. Distance sailed joins the positions heard, so it undercounts. Ship list after the International Cable Protection Committee’s “Cableships of the world”. About ship data
